DVR on the go!!!!!

[Archived in Entry]

[Blog-A-Rama] I am so hooked to my DirecTV DVR (ummm powered by TIVO I think is how they are now putting it)!!!! Now Archos has a cool mobile 40gb or 100gb unit...

Some slightly related from Technorati and Google.

[Engadget.com] DirecTV’s DVR also cuts the cord, uh oh Tivo - Engadget - www ...: Yesterday DirecTV announced they were on track to launch their own DVR in 2005, that’s all well and good. But as if TiVo hasn’t been through enough lately, one of their biggest distribution channels and most widely adopted customer bases straight up announced their decision to sever ties with TiVo. We’d kind of hoped that their new DVR would get play as an alternative to TiVo; but instead of continuing to work with DirecTiVos (which two of their three customers have) they’re cutting support as soon as their contract expires in 2007. The affair ends later this year in terms of distribution though, and DirecTV’s new lover will be designed by NDS, which we gave some face-time yesterday.

[Engadget.com] DirecTV prepping new digital video recorder, which spells trouble ...: Maybe wouldn’t be such bad news if TiVo wasn’t so dependent on DirecTV. They recently revealed that three-quarters of new subscribers last quarter came from DirecTV, which means they’re doing a poor job convincing people to buy their standalone boxes, and once DirecTV dries up as source of customers (and it will, you best believe that they will push those new boxes hard, since NDS Group is owned by the same parent company), they won’t have much else to drive growth, except maybe that deal with Netflix which may or may not pan out. We wish we had an easy answer for what they should do to stay in business (remember that they’ve basically never made money), but we don’t. Creating a standalone product that people could install on media PCs would be a good start, but that almost definitely wouldn’t be enough to keep them in business, and no cable company seems willing to put TiVo on their set-top boxes (they seem pretty happy with what they’ve got already).

[Blogs.msdn.com] Dan Crevier's Blog : I'm giving up Tivo (kinda): The remote on the Comcast box seems much more complex to begin with. There are several buttons that don't even work (like the PIP stuff), and then some buttons that are just shortcuts to things you can get to through the menus (like On Demand and My DVR). But, even after you get past those, I find that I can get around on my Tivo with just the arrows and select, but you need to use more buttons (like Last) on the Comcast box. It also seems like more navigation is required for some of the common operations.

[Pvr.blogs.com] How to setup a new TiVo without a phone | PVRblog: Vonage VS DirectTV DVR (model DVR40), My unit made a few succesful calls (useing the Motorola Voip box) but failed most of the time. So I called Vonage the shipped me a linksys broadband router with 2 phone ports (A cost of $99 to me) I installed it attempted to dial and after 8 hours of trying have given up (vonage asjusted the packet rate upped the band with, I even changed the modem speed on the DVR. (IE ,#whatever)) nothing has worked at all since then. Direct TV has been beeing a complete (pain in the but word here) about this issue, They have said I can not return the DVR (even though it was just purchased 12/18/04) and they say that unless I pay for a Land line phone I then I am stuck with a product that may or may not work beause Hughes Direct TV DVR uses a PASSIVE modem which apperantly is diffent than my modem in my computer which I have used over vonage to send 10+ pages of fax data out.

[Kaptainsatellite.com] » Direct TV DVR with TiVo Kaptains Satellite TV Blog: Yesterday i talked about Dish Network and their Free DVR (Digital Video Recorder). It’s only fair i mention The DVR Powered by TiVo from DIRECTV. If you have been looking on retailer websites lately you would have noticed DIRECTV does not advertise their DVR for FREE.
