Hey film fans, want to see A Guy Walks Into a Bar ...

[Archived in Entry]

[Washington Interns Gone Bad: The Blog] Apparently the couple hundred nominees cleared by both parties are not enough for these people when 10 extreme right wing ideologues can't get confirmed. The republicans have put their sleaze machines in overdrive on this issue, from their stunt getting the religious right all worked up over Democrats filibustering "people of faith" to offering a whole assortment of other lies. This should be interesting to watch unfold. Democrats, for once please don't let us down on this one.

Some slightly related from Technorati and Google.

[Washington Interns Gone Bad: The Blog] It has begun. The dark side has put into motion t...: Unless you've been living under a rock for the last few months, you know that the republicans are trying to dismember every last vestage of bipartisanship by ending the filibuster for judicial nominees. Apparently the couple hundred nominees cleared by both parties are not enough for these people when 10 extreme right wing ideologues can't get confirmed. The republicans have put their sleaze machines in overdrive on this issue, from their stunt getting the religious right all worked up over Democrats filibustering "people of faith" to offering a whole assortment of other lies. This should be interesting to watch unfold.

[Slight Inklings] Canadian government to support seed fascism: Canada has major reservations regarding the recommendations in the AHTEG report. Canada notes that the experts were unable to reach consensus and that while this is recognized in para. 15 of the report, this should have been made clear in the recommendation section of the report. Unfortunately, the report leaves the impression that consensus was achieved on all of the recommendations when this was clearly not case and in particular in terms of recommendation (b) which reads as follows, "In view of the current lack of data, recommends that Parties and other Governments consider the development of regulatory frameworks not to approve GURTs for field-testing and commercial use."

[Blog For Arizona] Filibroken?: So if you are a conservative, or a GOP member, or just an independent interested in keeping some balance in this nation, think on these matters and oppose the short-sighted, self-serving stunt Frist and Cheney want pull by 'reinterpreting' the scope of the filibuster. Consider that the Senate has already abrogated its traditional role in advising and consenting to treaties with a 2/3 vote by failing to guard its prerogatives vigorously and wisely. This radical restructuring of national power, stripping minority interests of their protection from international agreements which are against their interests, required no Constitutional amendment.

[==> The Truth About Political Stuff <==] Election by Litigation?: Against this backdrop, it's hard to be optimistic about next week. The Post reports that Democrats plan to have 10,000 lawyers "at the polls in battleground states''; Republicans say their lawyers will be "covering 30,000 precincts." Charges of voter intimidation and fraud are already common.

[==> The Truth About Political Stuff <==] 9/11 Families Group Rebukes Bush for Impasse on Overhaul: Their position has been endorsed by senior officials at the Pentagon, which has proved awkward for the White House to explain in recent days since President Bush has offered his public support to the Senate provisions, which have also been endorsed by the Sept. 11 commission. The House Republicans have also insisted on the inclusion in a final bill of several law enforcement and immigration provisions from the House bill that have been strongly criticized by civil liberties groups and were never addressed by the commission.

[==> The Truth About Political Stuff <==] Decision 2004: Fear Fatigue vs. Sheer Fatigue: Kerry pedantically refers to his every policy prescription, can start to look preferable to a slam-dunk Jerry Bruckheimer stunt. While the mantra of this election season has it that Kerry voters are voting against Bush, not for Kerry, it's equally possible that some of them see their choice as a vote for mundane, nuances-and-all reality over a hyperbolic fantasy whose budget in blood and money has spiraled out of control. After three years of nonstop thrills, Americans will just have to decide on Nov. 2 whether there could be fates even worse than spending the next four years being bored.

[==> The Truth About Political Stuff <==] Abu Ghraib, Unresolved: None of this appears to be true. The Army has prosecuted a few low-ranking soldiers and rebuked a Reserve officer or two, but exonerated the top generals. No political leader is being held accountable for the policies set in Washington that led to the abuses at Abu Ghraib and at other prison camps operated by the Pentagon and the Central Intelligence Agency in Iraq and Afghanistan, and at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, where prisoner abuse was systemic. And we've learned that the administration's respect for the Geneva Conventions, which some senior officials openly disdain as an antiquated nuisance, is highly conditional.

[Threeguys.blogspot.com] Three Guys: According to this same aide, Snow speaks frequently with the ranking Democrat on the finance committee, Max Baucus, who pushed for Snow's confirmation back in January. But, whereas Baucus thought of O'Neill as a "decent, independent thinker" if not an altogether influential Treasury secretary, he has formed an entirely different opinion of Snow. "He thinks [Snow is] just a political hack, in there to do what Rove wants," says the aide. That view conforms reasonably well to a description of meetings between Rove and Snow that The Weekly Standard's Fred Barnes offered in the spring issue of The International Economy: "A measure of where Treasury stands is the location of the Rove meetings: Snow goes to [Rove's] office."This administration has spent four years turning its cabinet departments into mere arms of its political communications office.

[Jasonbuckley.com] Washington Interns Gone Bad: The Blog: Apparently the couple hundred nominees cleared by both parties are not enough for these people when 10 extreme right wing ideologues can't get confirmed. [Thebluestate.com] The Blue State - Blog - November 16 - 30, 2004: He will be replaced by National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice, one of the main architects of the war in Iraq. Powell's departure is nerve-wracking for many Democrats who fear that there are no more moderate voices inside the Bush Administration. Ever since the days after September 11th, Powell and his State Department have been locked in an internal struggle against the Pentagon and the Office of the Vice President over how the war against terrorism should be fought. At times, Powell found himself out of the loop because of his feud with Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, a rocky relationship that dated back to the 1980's under President Reagan.

[Villanomo.com] not i, said the wolf » Blog Archive » Sideshow: Regardless, if nothing else, one thing is clear; the ideologues are willing to throw away major and longstanding platforms of their party in order to reach out to the extra chromosome members on the far right in order to keep them in the wagontrain. They will do this while never actually supporting real legislation, often dodging even being seen with them, because it is so incredibly unpopular with the public. I’m not sure if that should be called flip-flopping, ideological treason, or just being plain ol’ mushybrained.

[Mydd.com] MyDD :: Democrats: "When Democrats kind of cavalierly attack the religious right or go after Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell, our candidates have sent the signal to a lot of religious people, `Well, I guess they are not interested in me.' And I think this includes a lot of people who would fit very naturally within the Democratic Party." This is, um, not exactly what Democrats need in the only southern state that is moving in our direction. How can we hope to build the party in Virginia, and make it a true swing state, when our new standard bearer in that state happily spouts off some of the worst Republican Noise Machine lies about Democrats? Further, he said these things in an interview with the American Prospect for crying out loud, not exactly hostile territory for Democrats.
