[The Irksome Girl] Things that start with T: Tired. I woke up at 6:00 this morning full of anxious thoughts about the music work I need to be doing: getting ready to record the score for the Cornell nature film, learning and practicing pieces for a wedding with Pas de Deux (a duo with a woman who plays harp and flute), practicing for The Hanshaw Trio's ongoing recording project, preparing two workshops for a dulcimer festival this summer... so I had to get up and start working. Spent half the morning on one of the workshops, and the other half on the film score.
[fangirl squee-age: STAY AWAY.] Class Gathering, SingNet/SingTel, etc.: What you may lack in self-confidence you often make up for in skill - developing expertise, technical knowledge, and competency in some specialized area. You are adept at using your hands to create or fix things, and meticulous attention to detail and careful craftsmanship are your forte. Some would say you are a little TOO meticulous, for you can be extremely critical and petty if everything is not done exactly as you think it should be, and you worry about things that other people consider trivial and unimportant. You like to organize, categorize, and arrange everything into a logical system, and you are often distinctly uncomfortable when something does not fit into a neat category.
[Political Blog For The Politically Incorrect] Europe's Mujahideen: Nevertheless we can make some rough estimates of the numbers of Muslims residing in those countries, with the predominant source country in parenthesis. Demographers believe that the U.S. Muslim population does not exceed three million, less than 2 percent of the population.33 In France (Algerian, Moroccan) that population reaches 7 to 10 percent (news reports suggest five to seven million Muslims reside in France) with government figures on the higher scale and academics coming in as low as 3.7 million.34 The Netherlands Muslim (Moroccan) population reaches one million or 6.2 percent of the countrys 16 million people. Germanys Muslim population (Turkish) is about 3.7 percent (approximately three million) and Belgiums 3.7 percent.35 The U.K number is 2.7 percent or about two million, but radical fundamentalism prevails in many British mosques and communities.36 Thus France and the Netherlands have the largest Muslim populations as a percent of their population, followed by Germany, Denmark, Sweden, and Britain at around 3 percent. Norway, Finland, and Ireland have among the smallest Muslim populations in Western Europe, under one percent.
[IPBiz] New Scientist putting upbeat spin on work of Schon?: On September 26, 2002, the New York Times ran a page 1 story titled "Panel Says Bell Labs Scientist Faked Discoveries in Physics," with a first sentence "A series of extraordinary advances in physics claimed by scientists at Bell Labs relied on fraudulent data, a committee investigating the matter reported yesterday," referring to the committee headed by Professor Malcolm Beasley of Stanford University, which had issued a 127 page report on the matter. n2 A headline in the Newark Star-Ledger was even less kind: "Scientist's 'breakthrough' secret: He cheated." n3 Of the impact, the Times article noted: "the scandal tarnishes surrounding participants, including the co-authors who noticed nothing amiss, the scientific journals that critics say moved too quickly to publish the sensational findings, and Bell Labs' parent company, Lucent Technologies, which has been buffeted by a collapse of the market for its telecommunications equipment and tens of thousands of layoffs."
mgrier's WebLog :: When communications have to cross machine boundaries, people tend to realize that Something Special is going on, and coupled with the plethora of RPC experiments in the 70s and early 80s, we have pretty good stories for how to design interoperable program-to-program communications protocols. Several limitations come out though: the expectation is that while the program which serves the protocol may vary from machine to machine, it's generally assumed that the endpoint for the communications is a single program. Some protocols have evolved into meta-protocols where some namespace is used to further navigate into various programs which operate within the container protocol (e.g. web servers finding things served by cgi-bin or isapi extensions) but the issue there is to enable coexistence between static content and dynamic content generated by potentially a very large varying number of mechanisms (you could certainly have a site with a mixture of static content, isapi generated content, ASP, ASPX and JSP pages).
