Strange Films

[Future Perfect] Chris Beaumont starts it off by listing Mulholland Dr. at No. 1 for strangeness, followed by City of Lost Children, Happiness of the Katikuri's, A Clockwork Orange, Vanilla Sky, Suicide Club, Naked Lunch, Pi, Six String Samurai and Songs from the Second Floor.

[CINE - GEEEEEEEEEKS] A Barely Adequate List of Bizarre Movies: This Japanese take on the "Shaft" character finds maniacal samurai cop Hanzo the Razor fighting corruption by raping lots of women. See, his interrogation process for men involves horrible torture, but for women involves forcing himself on them until they submit, eventually telling him everything he wants to know. In the sort of needlessly bizarre twist that elevates this disturbing 1972 feature (that became a trilogy!)

Grand Salami Blog: ESPN's Peter Gammons is reporting that Oakland assistant GM Paul DePodesta is going to be hired as the new GM of the LA Dodgers. Yes, that's the same Paul DePodesta that your Seattle Mariners didn't even bother to interview for their open GM job in October and November. Before hiring Bavasi the Clown, the M's asked for permission to talk to A's GM Billy Beane, who's signed with Oakland through 2008, and were turned down. If the Mariners were impressed enough by what Oakland has done on a low-budget the past five years (who wouldn't be?) to be interested in Beane, it's puzzling why they weren't the least bit curious to talk to Beane's assistant, DePodesta, who would have come at a much lower cost than it would have taken to hire Beane (and potentially they also would have to have given Oakland some compensation).
Grand Salami Blog: The M's have finally made a trade (not for Milton Bradley) and as Jason at USS Mariner aptly points out, Bill Bavasi has been fleeced again, this time by new Dodgers GM Paul DePodesta (you know, the former Oakland assistant GM that the M's didn't even bother to talk to about the GM job...). Bavasi traded two pitching prospects, right-hander Aaron Looper and left-hander Ryan Ketchner to acquire utilityman Jolbert Cabrera, who had a career year with the Dodgers last year at age 30. Neither Looper or Ketchner were among the M's top prospects and Looper especially didn't have much of a chance for a career in Seattle with the M's bullpen depth, but as Jason points out, Cabrera is not the kind of player you trade two pitching prospects for, he's a guy you pick up on waivers or sign as a minor league free agent in the off-season.
seattlepi.com Mariners blog: M's sign Mulholland, Owens: Finally, we could get what weve needed for at least 2 years now, which is a player who can be used to give multiple players rest on a regular basis. Given that he can play all three outfield positions and that Raul Ibanez can play 1B, the M's would have the opportunity to rotate Mondesi with all three starting outfielders (Ichiro, Ibanez and Randy Winn), 1B John Olerud and DH Edgar Martinez, while not really losing anything in the starting lineup as far as offense. While technically a bench player, Mondesi could play as many as 5 games a week, while providing breathers for the core regulars to keep them stronger during August and September, which is something that was a major problem for the Mariners in 2002 and 2003.
seattlepi.com Mariners blog: Comment on M's sign Mulholland, Owens: I have two devout A's fans at my work, and they both are questioning & actually upset that Beane has picked up all these LHP's. Everyone is ALWAYS amazed at the deals this guy actually pulls off every year, and I truly believe that in 2004 he's stockpiling LHP's just for this purpose! Good LHP's are hard to come by, and he will be sitting there just waiting for the phone calls to start coming in during spring training. They have four (4) LHP starters with Mulder/Zito/Redman/Hammond(Hammond being a potential starter or reliever), and five (5) LHP relievers with Rhodes/Ramos/Rincon/Hammond/Bowie.
USS Mariner: This is a lot like I think Mariner fandom is like for us right now. Success and enjoyment of the boom years, even as we might not have been wholly satisfied with what we got from so much potential. After that, tremendous disappointment (Phantom Menace as 2004 season) and now, bafflement (can they be this bad twice in a row?). But even as we contemplate things like “is this season salvagable or should the team punt?” we can enjoy a well-played game that the Mariners come out on top.
