The basis for this idea is that these folks often use coercion metaphors to describe individual and collective social situations that many other perspectives regard as quite benign.

Regardless, it seems pretty obvious that student filmmaking—like independent filmmaking in general, perhaps—is one part swindle (conscious or otherwise), one part juggling act, and one part gamble that sometimes (as in this case) pays off—for the filmmaker if for no one else!
