TTG problems

[Archived in Entry]

[The 8th Sign] After some more extensive testing, I’ve really found only one problem with the auto-TTG. What the program does is monitor a folder for new files then converts them. Problem is with Tivo Desktop 2.0.

Some slightly related from Technorati and Google.

TiVo Community - New TiVo Desktop 2.0: Until I get the 7.1 update, I'm not concerned. After the install, I got a popup from the WinXP firewall complaining about the TiVo Beacon trying to get through the firewall. I just selected the "Unblock" option for this app, and was off & running. A "TiVo Beacon" app now shows up in my XP "Services" list when I run msconfig.

TiVo 7.1 rollouts | PVRblog: Jason - Yes, now and then isn't a big deal. But there are people claiming to be forcing many calls a day, trying to get TTG faster. That's just making it take *longer*. (Maybe TiVo should be nasty and anyone who does that goes to the end of the list - I'd do it if I were them, but I'm a BOFH...)

But on the plus side: TiVoToGo Hacks Already Abound | PVRblog: It must be difficult for TiVo, on the one hand they need to keep pleasing the content companies and I wouldn't be surprised if eventually they end this kind of discussion or any block simple extraction tools that come out of it. But on the other hand you have to consider the same folks figuring out ways to get unencumbered video out of their devices are also their biggest fans and customers. Someone in a thread mentioned how their DVD burning TiVo won't be getting the update for a few months (there was a major bug revealed in beta testing that only applied to a certain configuration of TiVo) so they were going out to buy a new standalone TiVo, just to play with these new features. Signature lines at the TiVo Community often mention owning 2 or 3 TiVos.

Engadget plays with TiVo Desktop 2.1 Beta | PVRblog: Seriously, the "evil" folks that do stealing already do stealing with or without DRM, it has no effect on their activities. What it does do instead is punish everyone else when they suddenly are told by their computer that they're not allowed to do something innocuous like use a DVD burning program they are comfortable with, and instead they are told they must buy the expensive new DVD software that is approved for use.

TiVo Archives | PVRblog: If you look at the ethernet hacking history, eventually after a few months of tinkering people figured out a stable way to get a TiVo on a network and then they hacked in support for talking to their TiVo. Many asked for ethernet support because the modems would often fry and in many cases an installation of a phone line nearby was required. Eventually TiVo opened up a way for people to update online and now from TiVo's own site they encourage users to buy a wired or wireless ethernet device (on TiVo's end, the cost of maintaining modem banks is high, whereas sending data over ethernet is almost free).
