Video Toaster - open source
[Archived in Entry, Video Editing Software]
Dave Halliday on 2004/02/08:
„In 1991, a couple of people at a company called NewTek wrote the “killer app” for the Amiga called the Video Toaster. For about $5K for the hardware and software, you could replace about $250,000 worth of dedicated video editing gear. Now (as they say in the review): “the Amiga Video Toaster allowed anyone that could afford to buy a car get into video production.”“

„ By Beam Tracer (Beamtracer) (198.142.206.222) on Wednesday, February 06, 2002 - 11:43 pm: This is a bit off topic, but relevant to all Mac users. Apple has purchased the software company Nothing Real, who make the amazing compositing application Shake. This should have huge ramifications around the film and television industries.“http://www.newtek.com/discus/messages/2/ 17284.html?1013076256 - Cached

„The B5 effects teams, both at Foundation and at NDI, useLightwave 3D by NewTek and specialized software to design and render the visual effects. For the pilot, the effects were rendered on a network of Amiga computers;later, Foundation used 12 Pentium PCs and 5 DEC Alpha workstations for 3Drendering and design, and 3 Macintoshes for piecing together on-set computerdisplays. The NDI team uses a similar array of equipment; see GeorgeJohnsen's comments below.“http://www.midwinter.com/lurk/making/ effects.html - Cached
„We wandered by NewTeks booththey make the Video Toaster and Lightwave, which are a couple of products we use at Space Telescope. Video Toaster has a long history in broadcasting, being among the first computer-based editing and graphics systems to hit the market, back in the mid-80s. Lightwave is a high-end 3D animation program, and its capabilities are demonstrated all across the sci-fi genre, used chiefly in all of the recent Star Trek series and quite a few movies.“http://junkyardblog.transfinitum.net/archives/ week_2002_04_14.html#000369 - Cached

„"We have decided to fork the gW3S distribution into two branches: The v1.x branch will continueto exist and will work on any base install of AmigaOS3.x with a TCP/IP stack. The v.2x branch willrequire some third-party software, but will also provide more functions. gW3S v2.0 is in it'sfinal stages.“http://amiga.czex.com/history/3_03e.html - Cached

„To add such things to the Amiga would be unnacceptable to me if they were to become part of the OS of the future. If however, as has been discussed, we go down a dual path of developing a new Open Amiga operating SYStem (OASYS) firmly based upon the principles of the old OS with new ones added then I see no problem in adding a few cludges to the old codebase to parallel what will exist on the new system IF IT IS UNDERSTOOD that the OASYS codebase will completely replace the old codebase + cludges when it is ready and that new development written for it will run properly on the new system (part of the great migration plan).“http://www.basden.u-net.com/amiga/ amiga.diffnt.orig.html - Cached
„The term in full is almost never used of microprocessor registers, for example, though symbolic names for arithmetic registers beginning in `A' derive from historical use of the term `accumulator' (and not, actually, from `arithmetic'). Confusingly, though, an `A' register name prefix may also stand for `address', as for example on the Motorola 680x0 family. A register being used for arithmetic or logic (as opposed to addressing or a loop index), especially one being used to accumulate a sum or count of many items.“http://people.ssh.fi/tri/misc/mit_jargon.html - Cached

„Then I talked to a friend of mine, his name's Chase Carey, who is on the board with Fox TV and I found out that Amiga is widely used now in the American television industry in deference to [Cairon?] and other kinds of on-screen graphic application packages, and then I found out that 50% of the cartooning in America is done on Amiga platforms. And then we cut a deal with George Lucas to put Destinations in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Museum in Washington, for Lucas' Star Wars exhibit and in doing so, I found out that they are important to their 3D special effects people.“http://www.basden.u-net.com/amiga/ amiga.diffnt.html - Cached
„Perhaps its my hardware, but I can batch render with other applications just fine, and my hardware meets the minimum requirements quite easily, so if it is my hardware, its a Quality Assurance problem at Newtek. basically the best I have achieved with screamernet is half a render (60 out of 120 frames)... an unbelievable feat of bugginess, that suggests that it was setup correctly, but the program is incapable of doing its job.“http://www.newtek.com/discus/messages/2/ 25560.html?1028171209 - Cached
